The Democratic Party of Japan's research committee on administrative reform on Thursday approved a proposal to decrease the number of independent administrative institutions from 102 to 65 through closures, mergers and privatization.
Among other administrative reform proposals, the committee advised the government to increase the number of apartments for central government employees to be sold, to bring the total amount of money earned to no less than 140 billion yen, double the 70 billion yen the government had earlier envisaged.
The government plans to draw up a basic policy on administrative reform based on the committee's proposals, and approve it as early as Friday's Cabinet meeting, according to sources. After that, bills on administrative reform will be submitted to the upcoming ordinary Diet session, the sources said. (Yomiuri)
