About 1.22 million people born in 1991 who had reached the age of 20 before January celebrated the Coming of Age holiday on Monday. Their ranks totaled 20,000 less than in 2010.
The figure reset the record low for people achieving formal adulthood for the fifth year in a row, according to statistics compiled by the internal affairs ministry.
The ministry started logging the statistic in 1968. It peaked in 1970 at about 2.46 million, when the baby boomer generation started hitting 20.
This year, about 620,000 men and 600,000 women celebrated the national holiday. The ratio of new adults to the population as a whole was 0.96 percent, marking eight consecutive years of decline. (Japan Times)
